Most of the drivers who own a Volkswagen car or truck with a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) will not know they have a dual-clutch transmission connected to the engine. With an automatic transmission, the engine has to drive a pump and energy is lost in the torque converter and clutch packs. The fluid also acts as a hydraulic fluid.
This differs from traditional automatics, which instead use a torque converter to engage power as well as decoupling at lower engine speeds to allow for idling without shifting out of gear. With traditional manuals, you lose out on the power produced by the engine during that disengagement period while the gear is changed.
