From 2016 to the present day, South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia issued no fewer than 16 recalls over the anti-lock brake modules fitted to 6,383,145 vehicles. Manufactured by South Korean supplier Mando, the suspect parts in question are referred to as ABS module by Hyundai and HECU by Kia, HECU as in hydraulic electronic control unit.

Responsible for providing the hydraulic pressure needed to shift gears, a failed pump can cause erratic shiftings, warning lights, or the inability to shift at all. This issue only occurs on models using electric power steering systems, so AWD X-Drive models that use hydraulic steering systems should be immune from this malfunction.

We were moving around a 2016 Kia Soul in the Brake & Front End Garage for a video shoot. To correct this type of wear, take the same steps as fixing outer pad wear as well as inspecting the hydraulic brake system and the caliper for residual pressure and guide pin hole or piston boot damage, respectively.

On models made after April 10, 2016, you will have to remove a portion of the HEPA cabin air filter to access the battery. Even if the majority of braking is performed with the regenerative braking system, hard stops and low-speed stops still use the hydraulic brakes. This will disengage the air suspension and parking brake.
