Wheel End Service – Wheel Speed Sensors and Bearings

When wheel speed sensors (WSS) were first installed on cars and trucks, they were typically mounted on the CV joints or differentials. These sensors were not the most accurate and didn’t start working until the vehicle reached 5 to 7 mph. These are called passive wheel speed sensors. As vehicles and ABS systems advanced, the wheel speed sensors moved to the knuckles and wheel bearings.

When Should Oxygen Sensors be Replaced?

At what point does oxygen sensor performance start to decline? It’s hard to say because a lot depends on the condition of the engine. If a high-mileage engine is using oil due to piston ring, cylinder or valve guide wear, phosphorus from the oil will contaminate the oxygen sensors and accelerate the aging process. The same applies to coolant that may be seeping past a leaky head gasket.
