While COVID appeared to be a blip on the economic radar for most auto repair shops, the aftermarket repair industry bounced back nicely, despite the issues with part availability and quality.

Auto Repair Shops Remain Steady, but car counts slipping

AutoShopOwner

From my sources, and speaking with shop owner friends and clients, most auto repair shops in the northeast are busy. However, car counts continue to slip as more and more motorists are extending their oil change intervals beyond the recommended interval from their repair shop. The uptick in business is coming from larger repair jobs, higher ARO, and increased labor rates; all positive signs.

Carbon Deposits and Direct Injection Engines

Tomorrow's Technician

In the late ‘90s and early 2000s, TSBs related to carbon deposits on the valves were few and far between. There are three reasons why direct-injection engines are more prone to carbon deposits. One reason is unique to direct injection, and the remaining two are problems for port fuel-injection engines that are made worse by direct injection. The primary cause of these problems is that fuel and added detergents are not hitting the back of the intake valves.

How Extended Interval Oil Filters Have Improved

Tomorrow's Technician

With oil life indicators pushing the average oil change past the 7,000-mile mark, it is not just the quality of the oil that’s improved, it is the quality of the filter, as well. Neglected oil change intervals can ruin the best engine oils and filters. As they accumulate miles, they become contaminated with carbon, water and various acids, all of which are a byproduct of internal combustion that will form a film of black, gooey sludge on the interior parts of the engine.
